The Making of Strange Egg Rolls and Other Bizarre Foods
I like cooking food. I like cooking Asian food, too.
What I saw created on this Thanksgiving-eve was not typical Asian cuisine; maybe not even typical food. She came over to my house with a bunch of Wal-Mart ingredients: tortilla wraps, cream cheese, carrots and lettuce. She said she was going to deep fry them. I thought, ‘sure. I’ve seen my aunt make egg rolls before. Not a big deal. Besides, my friend is Thai… she probably knows how to make egg rolls.’
She doesn’t. Her first question was, “do you think I can fry this?”
We had egg rolls in every shape and size: some were pyramid shaped, some were like trapezoids, some were square, rectangular, some dripping in oil, some burnt to a crisp.
I’m surprised she didn’t just drop dead after trying the first one. I gotta admit, it was damn tasty. But I only had half of one. Didn’t want to take any chances. She took the rest out to the beach to eat with friends, who I’m sure were surprised to see that their egg rolls were actually a trial and error experiment with flour and olive oil.
